Alright, I had been doing some thinking, and I realized that I've been a little unhappy with where the books have been going. The storylines of the last two books have felt more like public service announcements than anything else. Even before the environmentalist themes of the recent books, I've always felt that the overall feel of the stories were lacking somewhat in emotional and dramatic terms. So I recently had the idea for a comic book in the Maximum Ride universe set before the events of the first book, perhaps revealing more details about Itex and the schools, how much control they had over the Flock's development and creation. In any case, I'd prefer it if it were an original story not created by James Patterson. Here are a few writers that I think would take the series in a new direction:
Alan Moore
Writer: Watchmen, The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, Swamp Thing, V for Vendetta
Acclaimed co-creator of one of, if not the greatest graphic novel of all time, Watchmen, Moore has proven time and time again that his creativity knows no limits. Every one of his stories is set in a delicately crafted universe with equally perfectly rendered characters. If he were to go about a story in the Maximum Ride universe, one would expect no less than flowing dialogue, expertly crafted fight scenes and a wholly coherent plot.
Frank Miller
Writer: Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, Ronin, Sin City, 300
Jam packed with mature and adult themes, Frank Miller's dexterous approach to comic writing has set the bar for graphic novels to come. Action-packed, dramatic and never without a sense of humor, Miller would be ideal to re-imagine the Flock's dynamic or perhaps create his own Flock out of these elements.
Warren Ellis
Writer: Transmetropolitan, DV8, Hellblazer
Known for his use of extropian and transhumanist themes, Ellis would be an ideal candidate for exploring the backstory of the Maximum Ride universe. The way he manages to convey the group dynamic in DV8 would be a refreshing change of pace from the "we are a family" theme beaten over our heads in the MR books. Imagine if the Flock we followed were in fact a group of foul-mouthed, immoral, murderous, horny, incestuous, lazy, greedy punks? Not to mention his expert use of dark humor and equally dark justice would keep us turning the page just as easily as one of Patterson's works.
This comic idea is one of many ways I believe that Maximum Ride could evolve as a series, as there are so many more untold stories that haven't been told yet.
